Failed Capacitor CT Scan

Capacitors go bad, and more than that can go bad if it is at the heart of a failure investigation. Using CT scanning technology, we are able to see the details of a failed component or assembly, without compromising the part. Non-destructively inspecting the internal details is often key to understanding the failure, and getting to direct cause and root cause. Below is an example of a failed capacitor.

Note that the capacitor has been severely degraded. Damage to the dielectric, metal plates, leads and insulation are clearly visible, but also the details of each turn of the jelly-roll. This particular capacitor saw daily service for approximately 25 years, so the wear and tear is not unexpected.
