Industrial Computed Tomography (CT), commonly referred to as Industrial 3D Imaging, is the most advanced inspection technique available in the non-destructive testing (NDT) industry. Industrial CT is a digital x-ray method where a computer model or volume is generated from a series of 2D x-ray images. Individual images or “slices” are collected in the real-time 2D imaging mode. The collection sequence includes a 360º rotation of the sample about an axis where the individual 2D images are taken at predetermined intervals. After data collection is complete, the 2D images are sequentially downloaded into a modeling program for 3D image generation.

Once a 3D model has been created it can be viewed on a computer monitor, digitally rotated for various viewing angles, sliced to form section planes and filtered to remove obstructive content. Color may also be added for visualization enhancement. During the industrial 3D inspection process, individual images may be saved for presentation purposes. The entire 3D inspection may also be recorded in an .AVI movie format for viewing by the end user.
